Marshall Islands Pearlfish (Carapidae)

Pearlfish are long, slender fish that live inside certain invertebrates, particularly species of echinoderms although some may be in giant clams or even tunicates. The single species we have photographed lives in sea cucumbers. Two other species within this family are known from the Marshalls, one of which, Carapus mourlani, is known to prefer living inside the cushion star Culcita novaeguinea.
