Hypselodoris variobranchia Gosliner & Johnson, 2018
40mm

This one is a bit of a puzzle with some specimens we have seen leaning toward Hypselodoris apolegma in color pattern. The animal in the top photo appears to represent Hypselodoris variobranchia, which comes in forms with orange or purple gills. The second one is similar, but lighter in color with a narrower white margin. These were both found in the Blue Lagoon area of eastern Bali.

Near the Liberty wreck at Tulamben, we came across a pair of what we now consider to be this species. The one on the right clearly leans toward Hypselodoris apolegma with its purplish pink speckling between the dorsal purple pink and the wide white marginal band. It was close to a second specimen, on the left, with a much narrower white band that had no trace of the typical H. apolegma speckling.

The next three photos show the animal at right in the previous photo.

THe next three photos show the animal that was on the left side of the paired photo above.
