Camposcia retusa (Latreille, 1829)
35mm (~100mm including legs in typical position)

Camposcia retusa is kind of the classic decorator crab. With its long spider-like legs, it moves like and is about the size of a large tarantula. The carapace and legs are usually covered with bits of sponge, algae, tunicates or other items the crab sticks on to camouflage itself. During the day, these are usually found under rocks, but at night they come out in the open to forage. We have seen them on lagoon, pinnacle and seaward reefs around the atoll.

The two elongate eyes poking up through the shell decorations.
