Gnathophyllum americanum Guérin-Méneville, 1855
15mm

Gnathophyllum americanum is moderately common at Kwajalein, but is nearly always found around some of the large sea anemones, particularly Stichodactyla haddoni in Halimeda patches. They are usually on the sand or algae around the anemone, or sometimes on the sand under the anemone. Sometimes they are also found on the large sea cucumber Thelenota ananas in lagoon sandy areas. The species at Kwajalein comes in two color forms, the more typical black, orange and white and the less common but still not rare yellow and black.
