Stareye parrotfish, 54cm

We have seen these rarely, both on the seaward reef and on lagoon pinnacles.

Asleep on the reef at night.

We assume the gray one below is a color variant of this species.

Calotomus differ from other parrotfish genera in that their teeth are not fused into more or less solid beaks. The unfused teeth of an initial phase Calotomus carolinus from Hawaii are shown below.
