Marshall Islands Velvetfish (Aploactinidae)

These are bottom dwellers that feed on passing fish and shrimp. Some velvetfish seem to be strictly nocturnal. All are well camouflaged and can be difficult to spot. They are somewhat similar in shape to the leaffish, Taenianotus triacanthus, in the family Scorpaenidae.
