Marshall Islands Livebearing Brotulas (Bythitidae)

Only two species of Bythitidae are currently known from the Marshalls. Both live deep in reef crevices or deep in rubble, coming out rarely if ever. Unless otherwise noted, sizes given are maximum sizes for the species listed in Fishbase, not necessarily the size of the figured specimen.

Brosmophyciops pautzkei

Another species of livebearing brotula known from the Marshalls but not seen by us is (links to Fishbase):

Dinematichthys iluocoeteoides Bleeker, 1855

Two additional species in the related cuskeel family (Ophidiidae) either have been reported or should occur in the Marshalls. We have not seen them, but below are links to Fishbase:

Brotula multibarbata Temminck & Schlegel, 1846
Brotula townsendi Fowler, 1900

We have seen Brotula multibarbata in Bali, Indonesia.
