Carpilius convexus (Forskål, 1775)
120mm

Carpilius convexus is a medium large crab. It can be found on lagoon or seaward reefs, where it hides during the day. It is most often seen on lagoon reefs at night, when it comes out to forage.

Its strong pincers are capable of breaking up hard mollusk shells, which is a common food source for this crab. Below a crab is breaking back the aperture of a Conomurex luhuanus.

Young specimens often are spotted.

The next two are both small juveniles.
