Hymenocera picta Dana, 1852
50mm

These starfish predators are usually seen in pairs exposed or in small ledges or rock piles at night. They can work on a living starfish for some time.

They are often seen with dismembered starfish arms.

Smaller ones tend to have more pink and less blue.

Very small ones are somewhat speckled.

This little one has its sights set pretty high, but seems to be successful at consuming the end of a starfish arm.

A very young one before much color and pattern start developing.

This may be an even smaller one, freshly settled out of the plankton and fully translucent with no color.
